Technology - A Terrible Master and a Wonderful Slave

The Most Powerful Tool Humanity Has Ever Created

The story of human civilization is, in many ways, the story of technology. Every major leap in human progress has been accompanied by a tool that allowed us to do something faster, better, safer, or at a greater scale than before. From the wheel and the printing press to electricity, computers, and artificial intelligence, technology has consistently expanded the boundaries of human capability.
Today, we live in a world where technology accompanies us through nearly every moment of our lives. We wake up to alarms on our smartphones, navigate with GPS, communicate through digital platforms, work with automation, and increasingly rely on artificial intelligence to assist us in thinking, writing, and decision-making.
Given these realities, the question is no longer whether technology is good or bad. Such a question oversimplifies a far more complex relationship. Technology, by itself, is neither virtuous nor harmful. Its impact depends entirely on how it is used and more importantly, who remains in control. This is why the old saying remains profoundly relevant: Technology is a wonderful slave but a terrible master.
The Extraordinary Power of Technology
The greatest strength of technology lies in its ability to amplify human capability. Never before has an individual possessed access to such vast amounts of information. A person carrying a smartphone today can instantly access knowledge that would have taken scholars of previous centuries years to gather. Engineers can model structures before construction begins. Doctors can utilize sophisticated imaging technologies to diagnose diseases earlier and more accurately. Farmers can use satellite imagery and data analytics to optimize crop yields. In my own domain, safety professionals can use real-time monitoring systems, predictive analytics, and digital dashboards to identify risks before they result in injury or loss.
In countless ways, technology enables individuals and organizations to achieve outcomes that would previously have required significantly greater resources. It makes us more productive, more connected, and often more effective. For industries such as Environment, Health and Safety (EHS), technological advancements have undoubtedly improved hazard identification, exposure monitoring, incident analysis, and emergency response.Few would argue against the immense benefits these innovations have delivered. Yet embedded within these benefits is a paradox that deserves attention - The same technologies that increase our capabilities can, if used uncritically, gradually diminish them.
When the Tool Starts Giving Instructions
The problem begins when tools stop serving us and start directing our behaviour. Consider the modern smartphone. It was originally created as a communication device, but for many people it has become a constant manager of attention. Notifications demand responses. Social media feeds encourage continuous engagement. Algorithms recommend what we should read, watch, or listen to next and keep clinging on to craving 'a little more'.
As a result, many individuals find themselves reacting to their devices throughout the day rather than consciously deciding when and how to use them. This concern is not merely philosophical. Scientific research increasingly demonstrates that digital devices influence cognitive performance. A study published in Scientific Reports found that the mere presence of a smartphone can adversely affect attentional performance, even when the device is not actively being used. Participants performed better on attention-related tasks when a smartphone was absent from their immediate environment, suggesting that cognitive resources may be consumed simply by the device's presence. Similarly, research examining smartphone notifications has shown that digital interruptions can affect cognitive control and attention, reinforcing concerns about the impact of constant connectivity on focus and concentration.
The issue is not that smartphones are inherently harmful. The issue is that human attention is finite. Every technology that competes for attention inevitably influences how that attention is allocated thereby eating into the user's time and mind.
The Convenience Trap
Technology succeeds largely because it removes friction from our lives - GPS eliminated the need to unfold maps or to even remember the route you take often; Search engines eliminated the need to spend hours searching through books and libraries; Cloud storage eliminated the need to remember where information was stored or the need to carry that tiny pendrive; Artificial intelligence is increasingly eliminating the need to perform routine analysis, calculations, and content creation - all these developments are undeniably useful. However, convenience often comes with an underappreciated cost. The less frequently a skill is exercised, the weaker that skill tends to become.
Navigation provides an excellent example. For centuries, humans relied on mental maps, landmarks, spatial awareness, and memory to find their way. Today, many of us simply follow a blue line on a screen. Research published in Scientific Reports suggests that frequent GPS use may be associated with reduced spatial memory performance during self-guided navigation. The researchers observed that individuals who relied more heavily on GPS demonstrated poorer performance in tasks dependent on the brain's internal navigation systems. This finding becomes even more significant when viewed alongside decades of neuroscience research demonstrating the importance of the hippocampus, a region of the brain closely associated with memory and navigation. Studies of London taxi drivers famously showed that extensive navigation experience was associated with measurable structural adaptations in the hippocampus. Technology undoubtedly makes navigation easier. However, easier is not always the same as better. When convenience removes the need to exercise a capability, that capability may gradually weaken. (Will this gradually result is the creation on new races without these capabilities? - Out of my domain area, but still curious)
The Ergonomics of Technological Dependence
As someone working in EHS and human factors, I find striking parallels between technological dependence and ergonomics. Consider cycling ergonomics. A saddle positioned a few centimetres too low may not cause discomfort during the first ride. Handlebars placed slightly too far away may not immediately create a problem. A somewhat awkward riding posture may feel perfectly acceptable for a short journey. However, repetitive exposure changes everything. Thousands of pedal revolutions. Hundreds of hours. Months of accumulated stress. Eventually the body begins to pay the price. The damage rarely arises from a single dramatic event. It is the result of countless small exposures accumulated over time.
Technology affects human cognition in much the same way.Dependence rarely develops overnight. It grows incrementally. A few minutes less of sustained concentration. A slightly reduced tolerance for boredom. A greater tendency to seek instant answers. A diminished willingness to solve problems independently. An increased expectation that every question should produce an immediate response. Individually, these changes seem insignificant. Collectively, they begin to shape habits. Habits become behaviours. Behaviours become dependencies. Just as ergonomics seeks to optimize the relationship between a worker and a machine, we must also optimize the relationship between human beings and technology. Technology should fit into our lives. Our lives should not be permanently reorganized around technology.
Why Technology Cannot Replace Judgment
This is a lesson we have understood for decades. A CCTV camera can record unsafe acts - it cannot build a safety culture. A digital dashboard can display performance indicators - it cannot create accountability. An incident management application can track corrective actions - it cannot demonstrate leadership. A digital risk assessment platform can improve documentation - it cannot eliminate risk. Technology can support all these functions - it cannot replace them. A dashboard may reveal that incidents are increasing - someone still needs to ask why. An AI model may identify patterns within enormous datasets - someone still needs to decide what action should be taken. A permit-to-work system may improve procedural control - someone still needs to exercise situational awareness.
Technology excels at processing information. Human beings excel at understanding context, exercising judgment, balancing competing priorities, and making decisions informed by experience. This distinction is crucial. A poor process does not become effective because it has been digitized. A weak culture does not become strong because new software has been installed. Technology is an enabler. It is not a substitute for competence.
The Danger of Outsourcing Our Thinking
The rapid rise of artificial intelligence brings this challenge into even sharper focus. AI has extraordinary potential to improve productivity, accelerate research, automate routine tasks, and generate valuable insights. Yet its widespread adoption also raises important questions about cognitive offloading, the process by which people transfer mental tasks to external systems and tools.
There is nothing inherently wrong with this. In fact, civilization itself has been built upon forms of cognitive offloading. Writing allows us to store knowledge outside our brains. Calculators allow us to perform calculations more efficiently. Computers allow us to process information at unprecedented scales. The concern arises when assistance becomes dependence.
Why remember information when it can be searched?
Why calculate when software can do it instantly?
Why write when AI can draft it?
Why navigate when GPS can guide every turn?
Why tolerate silence when a screen can fill every empty moment?
These are not problems in themselves. The problem begins when we lose the ability to function without the tool. The purpose of a calculator is to accelerate arithmetic, not eliminate understanding of numbers. The purpose of GPS is to support navigation, not eliminate spatial awareness. The purpose of AI should be to augment human intelligence, not replace critical thinking. The danger, therefore, is not necessarily that machines will become smarter than humans. The greater danger may be that humans gradually stop exercising the very abilities that make them valuable.
Human Capability Enhanced by Machine Capability
Too often, discussions about technology are framed as a competition between humans and machines. This is the wrong way to think about it. The ideal future is not one where machines replace people. It is one where machines enable people to perform at their best. Technology should handle repetitive calculations. Humans should provide judgment.Technology should identify patterns. Humans should determine meaning. Technology should automate routine tasks. Humans should focus on creativity, leadership, ethics, and decision-making. The objective should never be human versus machine. The objective should be human capability enhanced by machine capability. When technology serves this purpose, it becomes one of humanity's greatest achievements.
A Question Worth Asking
Because technology is so deeply integrated into our lives, it is useful to occasionally pause and evaluate our relationship with it.
Can we sit quietly for thirty minutes without checking our phones?
Can we read a book without being interrupted by notifications?
Can we solve a problem before searching for an answer?
Can we travel somewhere without depending entirely on GPS?
Can we use artificial intelligence while still forming independent opinions?
Most importantly: Can we switch technology off when we choose to?
That final question may be the most revealing. Because if we cannot switch it off, perhaps we should ask ourselves whether we truly own the technology or whether it owns us.
The Real Challenge of the Digital Age
The objective is not to reject technology. Such an approach would be both unrealistic and counterproductive. Humanity's future will undoubtedly involve even greater integration of digital systems, automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence. The challenge is not to move backwards. The challenge is to maintain control.
Technology should make us:
Faster, but not more impatient.
More connected, but not more lonely.
More informed, but not less thoughtful.
More productive, but not permanently busy.
More capable, but not more dependent.
A bicycle is a wonderful machine. It allows a rider to travel farther and faster than they could on foot. Yet the bicycle cannot decide where the rider should go. It provides capability, not purpose. Technology should occupy the same role in our lives. It should extend our reach, amplify our abilities, improve our productivity, enhance our safety, expand our opportunities. But it should never become the force that determines our direction.
Ultimately, the defining challenge of the digital age is not technological advancement. It is maintaining human identity in the presence of increasingly powerful tools. Technology remains one of humanity's greatest achievements.
Our responsibility is simple, yet profound: To ensure that we remain the ones giving the instructions.
Conclusion
Technology has made us more capable than any generation before us. It has also created opportunities for dependence that no previous generation has faced.
The solution is not fear.
The solution is not rejection.
The solution is balance.
We must continue embracing technology while protecting the uniquely human capabilities that technology cannot replace: judgment, wisdom, curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and purpose. Used wisely, technology can be one of the greatest servants humanity has ever known. Used unwisely, it can become a master that quietly shapes our attention, behaviour, and decisions. The difference lies not in the technology itself. The difference lies in whether we remain in control.
Technology is a wonderful slave and a terrible master. Let it be.
