🌍 Embracing Sustainable Living, One Step at a Time! 👣

Dear Community, I recently encountered a common yet often overlooked problem - the sole of my running shoes decided to part ways with me.  🙄  Rather than rushing to buy a new pair, I decided to take a small step towards sustainability and repair them with Fevicol shoe fix. (I could have run down to a good cobbler, but I didn’t know anyone nearby) This experience got me thinking about the simple ways we can contribute to a more sustainable future. It's not just about big eco-initiatives; small, individual acts matter too.   Sustainability isn't just about solar panels and electric cars; it's about reusing, repairing, and repurposing in our daily lives. In this fast-paced world, we often forget that the most eco-friendly product is the one we already own – for the production of which, raw materials were used, processed in factories, transported and displayed in a shop until it was bought for use. So the way in which we as an end user can contribute is by prolonging its lifet

The Remarkable Transformation: How Importance To Worker Safety Revolutionized An Industrial Giant (Case study)

Image
Introduction: In the annals of corporate history, there are rare instances when a visionary leader revolutionizes an entire organization by focusing on a seemingly unconventional aspect. One such transformative tale is that of Paul O'Neill, who, during his tenure as Chairman & CEO of Alcoa, demonstrated that prioritizing worker safety could do wonders for an organization. From a struggling aluminum manufacturing company plagued by accidents and low productivity, Alcoa emerged as an industry benchmark with a soaring market value. Let's delve into this remarkable journey and learn how investing in employee well-being can significantly impact an organization's culture, productivity, and ultimately, profits.   The Challenge: Alcoa's Struggles in the Late 1980s In the late 1980s, Alcoa was grappling with numerous challenges, including declining productivity, frequent workplace accidents, and disengaged employees. Safety issues were tarnishing the company's image, and

🚇✨ Finding Inner Peace in the Metro: A Journey of Meditation 🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️

🚇✨ Finding Inner Peace in the Metro: A Journey of Meditation 🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️ In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often overlook the moments of tranquility hidden within our busy schedules. If you are a daily commuter in a metro train, one such opportunity presents itself during your daily commute. It is difficult, I can't complain if you have already started laughing at the article, but it can be done. First, try to find a tain or a compartment where you can manage a seat. (Recently I was talking to a friend of mine who works from Mumbai whose daily commute is the local train. He has identified a train and a compartment where his friends reserve a seat for him everyday. So, if that can be done in a Mumbai local train, it's possible everywhere else 🙊)  Closing our eyes, focussing on our inner selves won't bother others at all.. So please don't waste your time thinking about what others might think about you.  🌟 Discovering Serenity Amidst the Chaos As we step

Safety in recreational boating

Image
Dear professionals   It has been  a while since I have been thinking of writing something in the wake of the  recent  recreational boat accident that took away the lives of many .  When it comes to ensuring safety while on a recreational boat, there are several important checks that  you as  a passenger can do by yourself.   1.   Check for t he registration mark assigned to a Vessel such as registration number, port of registry and name of Vessel shall be displayed   on both sides of the vessel.  Registration number is allotted to a vessel only after mandatory checks.   2.    In addition to the identification marks, every vessel shall be painted and displayed on a fixed board, exhibited on the upper deck, the following information; a)  gross registered tonnage ; b)  maximum permissible number of passengers ; c)  name of the owner ; d)  date of last survey / date of next survey . 3.    The Owner or Master shall ensure that l ife saving devices like life buoys, life jackets, l ife raft (

Why should non-HSE professionals opt for HSE as part of their KPI during the goal-setting process?

While HSE is typically associated with professionals who have specialized in this field, it is essential for all employees to understand and to be part of a safety culture. Non-HSE professionals should opt for HSE as part of their KPI because it provides a comprehensive understanding of the importance of safety in the workplace. By understanding and adopting a safety culture, employees can prevent injuries, incidents, and environmental damage, leading to a safer workplace for everyone. Additionally, HSE is essential for the long-term success of an organization, as it can improve the company's reputation and reduce costs associated with incidents and legal penalties. 1. Safety is everyone's responsibility: Regardless of their job role, all employees have a role to play in maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. 2. Improved performance and productivity: When employees prioritize HSE as part of their KPI, they are more likely to adopt safe work practices, reducing the risk of ac

My thoughts on essential KRA/KPI in HSE

April marks the start of a new financial year and also the time for setting of Key Result Areas / Key Performance Indicators for all corporate employees (barring some organizations that follow a calendar from Jan to Dec) KRA/ KPI of each individual in a company should drive the company towards attaining the targets set at an organizational level.  So like any other KRA / KPI, the KRA/ KPI in HSE shall also be driven from the KRA / KPI set as part of the organization's goals which will cascade down as it is to the first line of top management - The CXOs and Directors.  Penning down my thoughts on what and how the KRAs/ KPIs for the leadership team and corporate HSE function should be -  What are some of the effective HSE KRAs / KPIs for the leadership team?  HSE Policy and Strategy Development: This KRA measures the effectiveness of top management in developing and implementing HSE policies and strategies. Top management should ensure that HSE policies are aligned with the organiza

Felt leadership - a leadership style that works

I have worked in multiple corporate houses. At times worked very closely with the business leaders. In my interactions with many business leaders during the course of my career - I have learnt that the leaders were very different from ordinary managers. They break stereotypes in thoughts and they always have a plan to convert thoughts to actions. There has been several tried and tested leadership styles that worked for the most efficient leaders. Some became billionaires in decades, some when they were just teenagers. Let me try to take a dive into one such leadership style - 'Felt leadership'. Felt Leadership is an approach to leadership emphasizing the importance of engagement, personal connection and purposeful actions to enhance productivity and increase efficiency in achieving organizational and team goals. The concept that has gained significant attention in recent years is a leadership style that is focused on building strong emotional connections between leaders and
